Cooking therapy has countless positive effects on our cognitive, interpersonal, social and physical skills. The relationship between our well-being and the food we eat is symbiotic. Health care clinics/counsellors across the world are now using cooking therapy tools for people suffering from depression, anxiety and other mental-health problems. It can sooth stress, build self-esteem, you can gain confidence and learn how to communicate and cooperate better. It requires a lot of improvisation; which starts with you stepping out of your comfort zone to just see what happens “out” there. It disconnects you from your everyday life and problems.
With the cooking element of the therapy, we focus on a recipe which allows you to learn and practice new skills. It boosts positive activity, goal-oriented behaviour. It improves your sense of wellbeing for that simple reason; you have made something for yourself and for others. There is an immediate feedback, the food itself and the gratification from others. It teaches timing and scheduling; which helps you become more capable of organising your life.
Coordination-sensory awareness is activated while preparing food, because you focus on the present moment, therefore it is also mindful activity. You do not think or worry about the past or future, because you simply cannot do both. The auto-pilot mode of your brain is switched off, which is in itself stress inducing. Cooking increases concentration, you focus on one thing instead of stressing emotions and negative thoughts.
Cooking is considered a meditative action. Cooking slows you down, calms you. In the meditative-cooking procedure you create a dish, which can be enjoyed by you or by someone else. Cooking can give you the coveted flow.
It has good effects on the brain, because it requires your imagination. Creative identity can be expressed through tastes, textures and flavours. Cooking is a creative process, because you need to use all your senses. The more you use and live out your creativity, the happier you are, because of the freedom you are allowed. The art of cooking gives you space for natural fulfilment and just like any other art, it is a form of self-expression.
Last, but not least cooking can improve your health for that simple reason that you nurture your body. Cooking also raises environmental awareness; as long as cook yourself your environmental footprint will be more likely reduced, relieving stress on you and our wonderful planet.
Cooking is ALL in one.
