What do you do with the seeds of an apple, apricot, peach, strawberry, melon, cucumber, tomato, pumpkin, or with a germinated onion, garlic? What do you do with the huge avocado seed, after you had a knife in it to remove easier? Or the dates and the olives seeds after chewing them all around?

Honestly, I threw them out to a regular trash bin for most of my life, considered as trash. It is not edible, it is the leftover of what I ate. There are still places, where a half-eaten apple is the sign for general trash. It is not metal, plastic or paper. So it is just 'trash'. And then I realized that it is actually not. So now, whenever I eat an apple, I just keep the rest of it, until I can trow it out to a forest, or to a compost bin, so it will be reused, and eaten by others, living in the soil.

avocados, pineapple and dates

I save the seeds, sometimes out of curiosity. I plant different seeds, and I watch them grow. I have two avocado, a pineapple and a dates plant. And they love to be together. They are probably not going to bring any fruits, especially because I live in the north part of Denmark, but they are big, strong and green. And they are here in my house, because I decided not to throw them out, considered them as trash. I do not save every seed, and not even all of them would germinate, because...

Not so long time ago farmers saved their seeds from season to season. Time has changed, and now seed companies sell the seeds to farmers, who have to buy them every year, to be able to fulfill the demand. Large-scale farming requires the same by every year, every harvest, and every single crop, vegetable or fruit. Seed companies, before they turned out to be seed companies, were selling chemicals: fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides. Hybrid seeds showed up in the 1920' and became popular immediately. Suddenly the same companies who produced chemicals for plants, were the ones who owned the genetically engineered seed businesses too. But they can still surprise us! Not long time ago the pharmaceutical company, called Bayer emerged with the largest seed company, called Monsanto. Just so you know. The biggest medicine and the biggest food company became one. What is next?

If you have farmers in your family, who have their own seeds, save them. If you have a small garden, weekend house or just a balcony, grow what you can and save the seeds. If you know farmers, who have their own seeds, help them and yourself and buy food from them. And I did not tell you, but steal flowers, fruits and vegetables (not from someone's property!) and save the seeds! Save the seeds and biodiversity, because sameness has no aesthetics.
